QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of sterile processes and principles required.
High School diploma or equivalent required. AAMI certification or licensure (LPN, RN) preferred. Supervisory experience preferred.
Constant and frequent judgment and response required. English language skills and communication required.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE
Category I exposure to blood borne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provides detail report to staff of any incomplete assignments to ensure continuity of procedures.
- Assist in the training of new employees and preparation of in-service education.
- Distributes patient care items in a timely manner and responds to STAT needs timely. Consistently issues appropriate supplies for patient care.
- Assumes responsibilities as needed for maximum unit efficiency.
- Demonstrates accountability of actions by reporting to supervisor at the any significant quality, cost or efficiency concerns.
- Interacts professionally with other departments to supply needed patient care items timely.
- Participates in problem resolution to assure accuracy and efficiency.
- Works closely with others and assigns tasks in a fair and equitable manner. Prioritizes tasks for staff as needed to achieve maximum efficiency.
- Knowledgeable and adheres to the sterilization process policies and procedures.
- Follows manufacturers’ guidelines for cleaning and processing of all instrumentation.
- Inspects instruments for damage and defects; lubricates items as required. Determines that each item is in good working condition.
- Assures all quality controls completed per AAMI guidelines for sterile processing department.
- Works with QAPI department for process improvement in sterile processing department.
- Sorts and arranges items into proper trays according to established policy and procedure.
- Wraps trays and individual items according to established policy and procedure.
- Accurately labels each item with name and expiration date.
- Correctly operates sterilizers, ultrasonic washer and other equipment for processing items.
- Positions items correctly in sterilizer and selects proper cycle; seeks assistance when needed.
- Checks sterilizer quality indicators to assure proper functioning.
- Performs required biological monitoring tests on all sterilizers according to established policy and procedures.
- Maintains availability of supplies for continuity or recording throughout sterilization process.
- Assure sterilizers cleaned according to manufacturer specifications.
- Maintains inventory levels and accurate records.
- Performs concurrent inspections of all sterile items in the facility.
- Checks for outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilized items; replaces items as necessary.
- Assures items placed in correct location.
- Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for the sterile processing area.
- Maintains and updates the instrument tray inventory list.
- Comply with facility Standards of Behavior and complete all required education assignments within the designated timeline.
